Davide Carlone – Croatina 2017 (750ml) on Sale

Description
The noted wine critic Antonio Galloni has recently given a great endorsement to the wines of the Alto Piemonte. And in particular, he s singled out a few younger growers, such as Davide Carlone, who are making authentic, value-packed wines not only from the ubiquitous Nebbiolo, but also blend grapes, such as Croatina. And Carlone s 2017 is the kind of wine one can afford on an everyday basis, while still enjoying the complexity and generosity that wines from this sub-Alpine zone can deliver. Croatina is also less acidic and tannic than Nebbiolo, so it s perfect for more casual dining and wine lovers who find Nebbiolo a bit of a tough go. Red fruits, a hint of Alpine conifer and a good mineral backbone are on offer here.
Croatina is a red italian wine grape variety, usually cultivated on calcareous-clayey soils. It is traditionally grown in hilly areas. The Croatina wine is pleasantly fresh and light enough and it doesn t require aging Its color is red with multiple shades, from red to intense ruby red. The 2017 Croatina delivers all the intensity this indigenous variety is known for. Dark cherry, blackberry, dried herbs, lavender, tobacco and licorice infuse the 2017 with richness and brooding power, all wrapped into a classic frame. I would give the 2017 a bit of time in bottle, although it is pretty compelling today. Bright acids and a good bit of tannin make it a fabulous wine for the dinner table, especially alongside hearty fare.
